BRIGHAM TEA – “MORMON TEA”
Brigham Tea, also known as Mormon Tea is known by Native Americans as “Popotillo”. This amazing herb is carefully wild crafted from a plant known as, Ephedra Nevadensis. Ephedra(s) are medicinal plants with use documented throughout human existence. Nevadensis is one of the most highly prized varieties as it contains almost no ephedra yet has many beneficial constituents. The effects and benefits are numerous and should be well researched.
Brigham Tea is often used as a daily drink simply for enjoyment and may be served hot or chilled. It is surprisingly mellow with an amber-reddish hue color, this tea is medicinal and very tasty, similar to a stronger Green Tea!

The tea comes fresh-harvested to ensure freshness and has a natural and mild flavor, and is so pleasant. There is no need for added sweeteners, such as honey unless that is your preference. We recommend vigorously boiling 1/4 cup (or a small bundle”) of the stems in about 8 cups (2/3 of a full pot) for 15-25 minutes depending on how strong you like it. Then, fill the tea pot the rest of the way to make your full pot. Strain and serve.

This Mormon Tea is sustainably harvested in the high desert mountains above 5000′ foot in elevation in specific areas in Utah. Only a portion of each plant is harvested. The larger woody stems are cut away as well as the medium stems and the tea is sent fresh to your doorstep. Each box should be opened immediately and he tea placed in a large, open container to air-dry for 4-6 weeks or until “snappy” dry. It can be enjoyed either fresh or dried and should store, “almost indefinitely”. We hope you love it and will share your feedback with us!

AS SOON AS TEA ARRIVES, AIR IT OUT!

Most of the tea that we ship out is “fresh” so make sure to open your packages right away and air out the tea for 1-2 months. If you don’t, your tea will mold and be unusable. We do not replace moldy tea.

HOW TO PREPARE IT
  1.
Prior to using the tea-reeds, please rinse them under cold wate
2.Only requires a small handful of tea (below) for a 2, or 2.5 qt
3.Fill pot with water, and bring to a boil. Then reduce and simme
4.The longer you simmer, the darker it will get.
5.We usually re-steep the same reeds, 3 days in a row. I know people who use it many more times.
6.Then using a strainer, I pour the tea directly into the
7.

Finished tea! If you prefer, stir in a little bit of honey or sweetener,

although the tea has a mild, pleasant flavor and doesn’t necessarily require it

Nice, mild flavor!

8.

Another option, is that you may “grind/pulverize” the reeds to make a powdered tea, or for use in making a Tincture. Use only a small amount at a time. Grind on “high”.

Place ground-tea into a teaball, and simmer in a tea kettle for 10-20 minutes.

Note: ground tea will not store as long as whole-reeds. We prefer to use ours in it’s “whole state”.

“Brigham Tea is an exceptional tonic. It tones up many parts of the body. It is said to be a decongestant and bronchial dilator. It has a reputation of being good for arthritis, rheumatism, cancer, bursitis, painful muscles and joints, relieving toxic conditions, purifying the blood, an aid to kidney and bladder problems, a help in curing venereal diseases, a big help to allergies and a relief to hay-fever sufferers.

“Brigham Tea is also considered an excellent demulcent for colds, and is used to balance the pH of the body. High in copper and iron, Brigham Tea is good for anemia.

“It is a desert plant that grows from two to three feet tall. It is a green brush with no leaves, only jointed little sticks that seem to all grow in the same direction. In the late winter or early spring most of the sticks will sprout a little cone-like blossom.

“The whole plant is used to treat asthma, hayfever, and other allergies and should be used during all stages of a cold or influenza, for arthritis, and for fluid retention. It has also been hailed for its appetite suppression and mental alertness.

“It is a “pick-me-up” in the long dark days on winter, it also is a natural pain-reliever, detox, blood tonic, and astringent. Countless are the testimonials for a variety of health issues, spanning centuries.” Most herbalist and botanist call this herb by its botanical name, Ephedra. However, the Chinese specie of this herb contains much more of the alkaloid, ephedra. The Chinese have used this herb for thousands of years. It also stimulates the adrenals.

“Be careful not to confuse Mormon tea (Ephedra nevadensis) with ephedra (Ephedra sinica and other ephedra species). Unlike these other plants, Mormon tea does not contain ephedrine, an unsafe stimulant.

“Frontiersmen valued it as a treatment for asthma, hay fever, altitude sickness, and any illness effecting oxygen intake. Besides respiratory conditions, it was also used as a blood purifier, believed to help treat rheumatism, and used as a digestive tonic. The plant earned another, less flattering nickname (Whorehouse Tea) for its reputation as a cure for venereal diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea.”

“As a medicine, people take Mormon tea for sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. It is also used for colds, influenza, kidney disorders, and as a “spring” tonic. Hence the nickname, “whorehouse tea”.

“Brigham Young had a very good knowledge of herbs and advised many remedies for the sick. He recommended this herb to almost anyone, to be used as a tonic to heal and tune up the body. This tea is said to be great as a: Decongestant, Bronchial Dialator, and De-Tox. It is very helpful if you feel a cold or flu coming on. It is said to relieve asthma, allergies, hayfever, arthritis, bursitis, pain, and much more.”

Also here is a very informative article re: Brigham Tea and Dr. Christopher’s research: http://www.herballegacy.com/Brigham_Tea.html

Brigham tea is a mild and pleasant tasting tea and you can use the same twigs several times for additional batches of tea. We harvest when it has been dry weather for a period of time, because moisture affects the natural ephedra in the bark.

People have reported back to us that the tea has helped them with a variety of issues, including: asthma, flu, colds, energy, weight-loss, arthritis, bladder infections, heart arrhythmia and palpations, etc.
