Radiation can enter the water supply due to both natural and man-made sources. Small traces of radioactivity are found in nearly all drinking water. Many people are concerned about the potential dangers of potential pollutants from an nuclear energy plants, laboratories, an EMP / Nuclear Strike, and other sources.
Some of the radionuclides that are responsible for the natural radioactivity in drinking water come from radioactive elements, and their decay products, that were incorporated in the earth at its formation, and others are produced continuously by cosmic ray bombardment. Gross alpha radiation is one form of the energy released. As a result, gross alpha radiation can be found in your drinking water.
There is no way to know if your water contains any radionuclides without testing it. Municipal water supplies are regularly tested for these radioactive substances, but if you have a private well, you should be testing the water regularly for a range of possible contaminants.
