MY OFF-GRID DINNER: A home-grown, solar-cooked dinner tonight…with pictures!


Okay – I’m a little “over-the-top” when it comes to talking about gardening, and cooking in Sun Ovens. I had fun making dinner for our family today….all home-grown and cooked using only the heat of the sun! (see pics below) I love putting OFF GRID DINNERS on our menu-plan – I feel like I’m “beating the system” somehow. I own three Sun Ovens and they are a KICK to cook, bake, and dehydrate with – you’ll love it too!

I strongly encourage gardening and home production and storage. I think there’s a special kind of “high” when you eat dinner from food you have grown yourself…especially when you use only the sun to cook – it’s the only “renewable resource”. It really feels great to cook a great dinner using no wood, charcoal, propane, butane, or any other costly resource. It’s fun, fast, easy……and CHEAP. Plus, during the summer months, you’re not heating up your entire house and causing your A/C to work overtime.


Today, we filled the Roasting Pan with a fresh young rooster we had to cull from the flock, (our 16 year old daughter took care of that)…..along with a few of last fall’s potatoes, carrots and garlic….all that were still in the ground and harvested today. Spices included salt, pepper, paprika, poultry seasoning, and dried parsley and rosemary from my herb garden.


Here’s how EASY:

Put chicken in pot

Put sliced potatoes & carrots in pot

Add dehydrated onions, 1 clove garlic and seasonings

Fill pot half-way with water, cover

Put in ALL AMERICAN SUN OVEN and align with the sun using new EZ SUN FINDERS (1:00 p.m.)

Slightly adjust oven to exact-line-up with the sun every 30 minutes or so.

3 hours later (4:00) — DINNER IS HOT, STEAMING, SMELLING GREAT & READY TO SERVE! (See my husband’s happy face)


You would want to start this dinner earlier in the day, if it were winter-time. I cooked this on a mostly sunny day, with just a few clouds blowing by.
